Italians believe that life’s problems can be solved by coming together at the table - ‘Mangia che ti passa’. This means ‘Eat and you’ll feel better’. Johnny and Elena Casano wanted to work together in business doing something they loved in a traditional way. In 1992 at 35 Anne Street South in Barrie, their dream came true. They opened Casano’s Italian Foods, nothing big, nothing fancy, just a clean, comfortable place serving good food for a fair price. This meant homemade food daily with both the freshest ingredients and the joy of cooking.
Elena continues to operate the restaurant after the passing of Johnny in 2014. It still is today simple, modest, and considers all their customers to be friends and family. For anyone new or with a propensity to forget, Johnny’s sign “Be Nice or Leave” continues to be the conversation piece at the restaurant.
